Reading the ladder

Two thirds of the ladder is Gold and Platinum

Overwatch's ranked population is unusually concentrated in the middle: Blizzard's own figures put the large majority of competitive players in Gold and Platinum. That is also why Blizzard added Emerald between Platinum and Diamond in August 2026, to split the most crowded part of the ladder.

Where these numbers come from

Blizzard publishes competitive rank distributions in its developer updates now and then rather than every season. This table is the Season 17 breakdown from July 2025, as reported by several outlets that agree on every tier. It predates the Emerald tier, so Emerald has no row; we will replace it when Blizzard publishes figures for the current ladder.

Where is Emerald in this table?

Emerald was added in August 2026, after the most recent published breakdown, so it has no figure yet. Players who are Emerald today were counted in Platinum or Diamond at the time.

How rare is Champion in Overwatch?

Blizzard put Champion at under 0.1% of competitive players, which is why it is counted together with Grandmaster here.
