Zul’Gurub debuted on September 22, 2005, as a feature of Patch 1.7 - Rise of the Blood God. Upon its initial release, it was designed as a 20-person raid activity. Players were able to revisit Zul’Gurub in its original form in WoW Classic, following its re-introduction in April of 2020.

Zul’Gurub was transitioned from a 20-person raid to a 5 person-dungeon during patch 4.1.0 of the Cataclysm expansion. Despite the numerous map adjustments made to World of Warcraft throughout Cataclysm, Zul’Gurub underwent minimal changes.

You might assume Zul’Gurub follows a weekly lockout schedule like most WoW raids, but that is not the case! The raid actually features a 72-hour reset, allowing you to re-enter 3 days after your previous clear.

Zul’Gurub requires no attunement, whether you are entering as a dungeon or a classic raid. However, it is a lvl 60 instance in WoW classic, and you must be at least lvl 50 and have a full raid team to enter.

In WoW Classic, Zul’Gurub is a 20-person raid, consistent with its original release. Beginning with Cataclysm and continuing into the current retail version of WoW, the instance has functioned as a 5-person dungeon.

Hakkar the Soulflayer serves as the concluding boss for the raid version of Zul’Gurub. Once the raid was transformed into a dungeon for the Cataclysm expansion, Jin'do the Godbreaker replaced him as the final boss of the instance.

A large portion of the bosses in Zul’Gurub are optional, though one particular boss is easy to overlook unless you follow specific steps to summon them. Gahz'ranka is a massive hydra that remains dormant in the waters near Pagle's Pointe. To summon this boss, you need a Mudskunk Lure and five Zulian Mudskunk. The Mudskunk Lure is obtained from the Nat's Measuring Tape quest, and the Zulian Mudskunk must be caught from “Muddy Churning Water” pools within Zul’Gurub by a player possessing at least 300 fishing skill.
