Archaeology

As the initial and currently final secondary profession Blizzard introduced since the launch of WoW, it is clear this was intended as an experiment. Archaeology functions quite differently compared to every other WoW profession. It is evident that the design prioritized a fun activity over practical utility.

The concept involves your character traveling to various locations across the globe to uncover ancient treasures. Upon reaching each site, you must engage in a mini-game where you utilize specific tools to pinpoint the exact location of these treasures.

After collecting a sufficient number of relics of the past, you gain an item. Potential rewards consist of mounts, pets, toys, and even some cool looking gear. Unlike other gathering and crafting professions that serve practical purposes, this is primarily a treasure seeking adventure that provides enjoyable additions to a player’s collection.

To address the obvious: the profession is currently in stasis. It did not receive significant content updates during the previous expansion, and there appear to be few plans for it in The War Within.

The primary output of this profession consists of items for your collection. You do not craft useful equipment or gather materials that hold value for other players. While you can sell relics on the Auction House, Archaeology will not be appearing on any "Best professions for Goldmaking" lists anytime soon.

Currently, Archaeology offers a unique “treasure-hunting” experience alongside rewards for your collection. Therefore, the value of this profession depends entirely on your personal interest in expanding your collections with the available items.

After learning Archaeology, dig sites will appear on your map. You may begin digging at any location you choose, as there is no required sequence. Reaching a site displays a large contained area on the mini-map. Here, you must survey the terrain using a theodolite. When it spawns, the color will change to red, yellow or green, signaling your distance from the “fragment” and the direction you should travel to locate it.

When you arrive at the correct spot, a shovel icon appears overhead. Digging at that location uncovers the fragment. Continue this process until finished. Fragments are used to research the artifacts, and once sufficient research is completed, you receive your reward.

In short, it appears the developers are dissatisfied with the current state of the profession and have opted not to create new content until they determine its future direction. Although primary professions underwent a major rework in the previous expansion, Cooking, Fishing and Archaeology remained unchanged. In TWW, Archaeology was superseded by features such as ‘the Big Dig’ and treasure hunting.

While most artifacts found are common items providing bits of lore, there are valuable collectibles to be discovered. Specifically, you can obtain 5 titles, 4 mounts, 10 pets, 18 toys, 1 heirloom, 1 alchemy recipe and 24 BoA pieces of gear. Although these items are not essential, collectors will surely value the aesthetic appeal of these artifacts.
