There are over 170 champions in League of Legends, but while many of them have a name and a mood board, there are also notable ones with well-written backstories and personalities that feel satisfying to read and get to know.

Jhin, the Champion Who Made Murder Editorial

Jhin has a very specific but disturbing character design. He’s a serial killer who believes himself to be an artist, has a fixation on the number four, and uses his gun as a paintbrush. But Riot made very good use of these details to create a complex, broken character who helps flesh out the strange world of Runeterra.

The number four theme is everywhere, including four bullets in his weapon and bonus execute damage dealt on every fourth shot. His voice acting adds depth to his character as well, shifting from theatrical and campy to menacing in a single line. He calls his victims puppets, showing his twisted mind.

This is the story of a menace that was loosed to further terrorize during the Noxian invasion. This makes his story the best-written in League because Riot never bothers to explain the reason for his behavior. It’s a showpiece of storytelling restraint, in a field of dime-a-dozen villain sob stories that more games need to emulate.

Viego and the Tragic Lore That Broke Half a Continent

Viego’s story is the most successful tragedy that Riot ever made, and it works well because no one ever tries to absolve him of his sins. But while his origins as a young king who married a seamstress named Isolde, then losing his love when an assassination attempt against him accidentally poisoned her, feel dangerously cliché, the brilliance in the writing kicks in.

The event transforms Viego into a shell of a human, obsessed with the promise of resurrecting his beloved. He takes Isolde’s corpse to the Blessed Isles and demands that the keepers restore her, then takes the waters of Life by force after he is refused. The event triggered a magical detonation that turned the Blessed Isles into the Shadow Isles, which birthed Hecarim, Kalista, and the Black Mist plague, with Thresh having led Viego there himself.

The tragedy doesn’t stop either, as Isolde’s revival leaves her horrified by what she has become. She is killed by Sentinel Akshan, and Viego is left with nothing but ruin and grief. An authentic tragedy from beginning to end.

Lucian and Senna, the Best Tragic Love Story in Runeterra

Lucian and Senna were a Sentinel duo hunting the Black Mist, then fell in love, but were separated when Thresh appeared, and Senna’s soul was imprisoned in the lantern when she took a blow to save Lucian.

During her imprisonment, Senna learns to use the Mist and later emerges as someone capable of wielding both darkness and light. At the same time, Lucian became hell-bent on hunting Thresh, sacrificing all else.

But even when they reunite later, Senna has changed so much that their reunion is not clean but is complicated by the profound changes both have undergone. This further adds a layer of complexity to their story.

Jinx and the Lore That Arcane Made Canon

Jinx had always been one of the best-written champions in League of Legends, but Arcane solidified it to a point where it became undisputed. She starts out as Powder in Zaun, who loved and idolized her sister Vi. A series of unfortunate events then upends her entire world, and transforms her into Jinx.

Her story is that of a person broken in a very specific way, wanting Vi but immersing herself in chaos to drown out that desire. The lore shows that her flair, manic actions, and Fishbones are all armor that she uses to protect her vulnerable self. This gap serves her character well, making her so easy to relate to for many.

She can also be considered to have the best lore in LoL because her existence reshaped Piltover and Zaun. Both Caitlyn and Vi took their respective paths because of her, while the Hextech war between Jayce and Viktor also escalated because of her. This shows that one traumatized kid can have a huge impact on the world.

Swain and the Inverted Villain at the Top of Noxus

Swain has some of the most underrated writing in the game. On the surface, he looks like a generic tyrant: a crippled war hero who clawed his way to the top of Noxus, replaced his lost arm with a demonic one, and went on to rule the empire. But there's far more to him than that.

He is actually a person who mimicked Faust, bargaining with a demon, but coming away the victor. He binds the demon Raum to himself and uses the bird as a knowledge engine, allowing him to see events across Runeterra and pull the strings from afar. But his long-term goal is for Noxus to survive the next thousand years. Because of this, he is at odds with LeBlanc and the Black Rose, who plot against him even as he works to dismantle them.

Noxus is supposed to be the side of the bad guys, but Swain turned it into something more, a meritocracy whose horrific methods are left to the reader to digest. This makes Swain one of the best Noxus characters by a wide margin.

Diana and Leona, the Mount Targon Heartbreak

These two represent the best example of how to write religion into game lore. They grew up together on Mount Targon, but while Leona was chosen by the Aspect of the Sun, not the Solari order that rules the mountain, Diana was drawn to the forbidden Lunari teachings that the Solari spent centuries erasing from history.

Diana became the Lunar Aspect and confronted the Solari elders, but she was branded a heretic, and she killed them. Leona, now the Aspect of the Sun, clashed with Diana on the mountain. But this story is one where no one side is truly right or wrong. The Solari and Lunari both hold on to their beliefs, but those beliefs bring about friction and conflict.

As for Leona and Diana, they love each other but are burdened with the need to kill the other. The best thing about their story is that Riot never lets them off the hook for anything, which makes for the best religious-conflict writing in any MOBA or maybe even in most games.

Honorable Mentions, from the Freljord to the Sun Disc

The ones mentioned above contain the best storylines in League of Legends, but there is no shortage of excellent writing to be found in LoL. Here are a few more notable additions before we wrap this up.

1. Thresh is another excellent demonstration of storytelling restraint. He was a cruel warden who willingly became a wraith with a lantern of souls that he will torture forever. His story is that of a bitter man who chose this fate for eternity.
2. Pantheon’s lore revolves around the body of Atreus, who survived the aspect of War being killed inside him, and already faced and wounded the Darkin Aatrox, now carrying the Pantheon mantle to protect mortals. This makes for one of the more interesting revisions that Riot has created, turning Pantheon’s lore into something out of Greek mythology.
3. Jayce and Viktor are the best-written rivalry in LoL in large part due to the screen time afforded to them in Arcane. The story of two friends whose idealism and utility exploded into the Hextech versus Glorious Evolution war is epic.

Here’s a rundown of a few more notable storylines:

• The Freljord trio of Ashe, Sejuani, and Lissandra carries the entire region’s story with three queens vying for the same crown.
• The writing for both LeBlanc and Black Rose enriches more than just their own plots.
• Ryze is the best traveling old mage in the game, with his quest to hunt World Runes across Runeterra to keep them out of the wrong hands.
• Ahri’s reframed story gave her a real personality, with emotional beats that helped her grow beyond her archetypal hot-fox role.
• Rakan and Xayah are a rare romance without the tragedy, which can be refreshing in a sea of tragic love stories.
