There are 21 unique level borders in League of Legends to unlock as you play. There's a chance you've seen a specific border but haven't figured out how to get it for yourself. These frames are cosmetic, but having the freedom to style your profile can be a fun and meaningful way to add value to your game.
Let's go over the level border feature in LoL, and see how to unlock all of them.
What Are Level Borders in League of Legends?

Level borders, sometimes called level frames, are decorative frames that wrap around your summoner icon, whether it's for your profile, friends list, or pre-loading screen. New level borders are unlocked upon reaching certain milestone levels, and the themes for each are based on a game region, faction, or skin line from Runeterra.
Border access is permanent once unlocked, and you can equip any border of your liking at any time based on your account's level. It's all part of your account's visual style.
All 21 Level Borders in League

The old level borders were introduced in November 2017, along with the removal of the game's level 30 cap. These borders originally had different designs, but they were all redesigned in April 2022 to better match the game client's overall feel and aesthetics. The new designs are cleaner and more minimalistic, though high-level ones are still quite ornate.
The borders span different level milestones, ranging from level 1 with the Piltover frame all the way up to level 500, with each one unlocking once you hit its required milestone.
Below is a list of all borders in the game, as well as how to unlock every one.

How to Unlock More Level Borders

Players can unlock a new border roughly every 25 levels by earning XP to raise their LoL level through matches in Summoner's Rift, ARAM, ranked, and Co-Op vs AI. Custom games do not count since no XP is earned there, unlike normal games. If you're looking to unlock borders faster, winning games is the fastest path since losing nets less XP. Make use of XP boosts and bonuses to reach milestone levels faster and gain access to all level borders.
While Co-op vs AI does provide XP, you get diminishing amounts past level 10. If you're looking for the best leveling methods, check out how to level your account faster on BoostRoyal.
Are There Level Borders Beyond Level 500?

You'll unlock the final, prestigious level 500 border upon reaching that milestone, despite the game having no level cap and some players hitting a summoner level as high as 5000. Many feel that this is such a missed opportunity, and many have been requesting that Riot Games add more borders past Eternus at level 500, especially since you can still earn level-up capsules with champion shards and Blue Essence past that point, with no additional borders to show for it.
There's still no news of any possible additions, but this is still one of the most popular requests on forums, and many hope to see new level borders in League added in the future.
Level Borders vs. Ranked Borders

There are two types of LoL borders. Ranked borders are representative of your current rank from competitive matches and are updated in real time as your ranking changes based on your performance. These rank borders are displayed only at Silver and above. It's not a cosmetic feature. If you want to better understand ranked tiers and rewards, check out BoostRoyal's LoL ranking system guide.
Compared to rank borders, you earn level borders in League of Legends through your account level and spending time playing the game. Players who have more high-level borders unlocked just mean they spent more time playing League. This is entirely different from rank borders that show your consistency and capability as a competitive player. There are borders that come bundled with event skins, but those will cost you, unlike level borders that are free.
How to Level Up Fast in 2026

Having all 21 unique level borders earned through 500 levels is a small flex that shows off your dedication to League. While it's not a mark of achievement or skill, it still effectively highlights your dedication to your game. It's a great way for players to feel proud of the time they put in, even if they're not contenders for the top ranks.
But if you want to reach level 500 and unlock every level border, make use of three key tips. Play Summoner's Rift PVP, which awards the most XP compared to other game modes. Stack XP boosts along with that to gain XP faster for the best effect.
But if you'd rather not have to endure the daily grind necessary to reach level 500 and unlock those borders, you can grab a leveled LoL account on BoostRoyal instead. This lets you play the game with any border you want right from the start.
