Valorant launched in June 2020 with an initial roster of just 11 agents, but since then, Riot Games has expanded the list of Valorant agents to 29!
Each of these 29 agents has stuck to their defined roles, with many even ending up quite different after undergoing balance changes.
In this guide, we'll review the entire list of agents and examine each agent's usage and capabilities, so you can go into every game with extra knowledge.
The Four Roles in Valorant

There are four roles in the game, and each Agent is designed to closely match the capabilities of its role.
Duelists are the entry fragging agents who are the first to enter a site. These agents are responsible for getting opening kills, securing space for the team, and breaking defender setups.
Initiators are equipped with various tools such as flashes, stuns, recon bolts, and other effects used to clear corners. They ensure that the team can enter a site without falling into a trap.
Controllers provide the team with a tactical advantage by using smokes. They do so by obstructing choke points, cutting sightlines, and allowing the team to operate under cover rather than in wide-open space.
Sentinels are primarily responsible for defense, locking down sites, and keeping watch over the flanks. They keep watch to prevent ambushes and let the team push forward.

Duelists: The Front-Line Fraggers

These are aggressive frontline fighters designed to engage enemies in all types of ways, each with distinct abilities and skills that shape their playstyle. There are currently eight such playable agents in Valorant.
Phoenix

Phoenix is a highly self-sufficient attacker who is near unkillable. He can blind enemies, heal himself, and create a wall of fire to block sightlines with Blaze. His Run It Back ultimate allows him to respawn at a set marker once killed.
He's been overshadowed by other agents for years, but recent patches have made him much more relevant. He's a top choice now for players who operate independently.
Jett

Jett is the gold standard for speed. Her Tailwind dash and Updraft allow her to dash horizontally and launch herself in the air for top-tier evasion. This makes her the best character for wielding a slow, heavy sniper rifle, which she can fire and then dash back to safety.
Her Ultimate adds further utility by dealing throwing-knife damage. She is currently one of the most mobile characters in-game and is perfect for players who want to aggressively engage enemies
Raze

In contrast to speed, Raze relies on pure explosive damage instead. Her Boom Bot, Blast Pack, Paint Shells, and Showstopper make her excellent for space clearing and forcing enemies out of their hiding spots. Players often use her explosive satchels to vault over walls for highlight reel-worthy kills.
But while she is highly effective, it does require a lot of skill to pull off. Be sure that you understand how her explosives bounce to make full use of her in matches.
Reyna

She is famous for pubstomping. While she has zero defensive contribution to any team, she has an overwhelmingly aggressive game. She can heal herself or become invincible upon landing a kill, or both invincible and invisible if her Empress ultimate is active, while her ultimate boosts her firing speed, which makes her bonuses almost seem automatic.
While the lack of team synergy makes her a bad pick for highly competitive matches, low-strategy fights make her selfish but highly offense-oriented kit quite rewarding to have.
Yoru

Yoru is the agent built for deception. His teleport markers enable him to warp across the map, send fake footstep sounds to confuse opponents, and bounce blinding flashes off walls. He can also turn invisible to scout areas.
He was initially a weak agent, but a 2022 rework buffed him significantly. He requires a high level of strategy to use, but he is highly effective when used properly.
Neon

Another agent built for speed, Neon can sprint and slide to close in on defenders before they can swap to a rifle. Her Relay Bolt bounces and stuns, while her Fast lanes create an electric wall that can block sight. Her ultimate lets her unleash lightning while running.
She is still one of the top Duelists in the game, and that's after attempts by Riot to nerf her.
Iso

As you'd expect from the name, Iso is a one-on-one specialist whose Double Tap ability lets him activate a shield, refreshed by shooting an orb after each kill, that absorbs any single damage instance. His ultimate can pull in enemies into an isolated area where there can be no interference from other players. This makes him well-suited for a very specific purpose, but if you enjoy pure dueling, he is an excellent pick.
Waylay

She is a relatively new agent added in March 2025, and is the first space-taking Duelist in a long time. She has two dashes per round with Light Speed, can slow enemies with Saturate, and can set a safety marker with Refract that she can teleport to, along with an ultimate that sends out an expanding beam of light that slows enemies while boosting her own speed.
Her unique abilities allow her to play like a hybrid between Jett's speed and Yoru's teleport game, making her especially dangerous in long and open areas. She's a great pick for beginners and advanced players alike.
Initiators: Information First, Frags Second

Initiators primarily work as scouts and support units whose job is to gather information, reveal enemy hiding spots, and set up advantages for frontliners, such as Duelists, to advance.
Sova

This agent is the best at information gathering. His Recon Bolt can scan entire areas of the map for enemy positions, while Owl Drone can tag defenders. Shock bolts deal damage from afar, and his ultimate fires three blasts that pierce through walls. This is very effective for any match but requires players to memorize the exact angles and spots around the map where shooting his ultimate converts for the team.
It takes time to learn to use Sova properly, but when you do, he is one of the best characters in the game.
Breach

Each of Breach's abilities can pass through walls, allowing him to safely force defenders out of their hiding spots. His ultimate triggers an earthquake in the area, stunning anyone caught within its area of effect, effectively winning the current clash for the team. Pair him with Raze or Neon for the best results.
Skye

She is the most versatile support agent in the game, with her kit allowing her to blind enemies, scout, and heal. Her Seeker's ultimate sends out three homing creatures that track the three nearest enemies and restrict their vision with nearsight. She is extremely valuable, being the only scout character who can also heal, but she demands a lot of time and effort for players to master controlling her scout animals.
KAY/O

This robot agent can suppress all enemies within a specific range by disabling their abilities. He can also use his NULL/cmd ultimate that suppresses an entire area, along with blinding and explosive grenades. He effectively neutralizes any other agent, but doing so requires mastering his blinding grenades.
Fade

Fade can reveal anyone in her line of sight, chase and blind detected targets, and bind enemies to their current position. Her ultimate blasts across the map, deafening, applying decay, and trailing enemies. She is the best alternative to Sova due to kit similarity, but is actually the preferred option for maps with tight corners.
Gekko

His abilities each summon different types of beasts that can either blind, disorient, or damage foes. After using any of these, he can pick them up and throw them again after a short recharge period. One of these creatures can even plant or defuse the spike. His Thrash ultimate is useful for detaining enemies caught in its blast.
Gekko's ability to reuse his abilities makes him an extremely cost-effective pick for any match.
Tejo

Tejo is the newest Initiator released in January 2025, bringing a rocket launcher feel to the role with his homing missile kit. He has sticky grenades that concuss and stun, homing missiles with Guided Salvo, and a Stealth Drone that suppresses enemies with its pulse blast. His Armageddon ultimate creates a massive explosion with a wide radius that virtually guarantees a kill.
He is highly valuable for having an ability that can shut down enemies without a sacrifice, along with an ultimate that can kill anyone trying to defuse the bomb, but doesn't get picked as often.
Controllers: The Smoke Agents

These agents block sightlines and lock down whole areas for the team. Recent changes and character additions have drastically altered how they're used.
Brimstone

Brimstone is the standard for smoke agents. Brim allows him to call in three smoke drops anywhere within range, but also has fire grenades capable of blocking narrow pathways, and an orbital strike ultimate that calls down a deadly beam from orbit.
He is an easy character to learn for beginners and is very effective on smaller maps.
Omen

Omen's biggest asset is the ability to place smokes from a distance without line of sight. Paranoia nearsights and deafens enemies in a line, and he has Shrouded Step that lets him reposition even to high ground. His ultimate can teleport him anywhere, even behind enemy lines, making him able to trap enemies anytime.
Viper

Viper uses toxic gas to control the battlefield. Toxic Screen is a wall of poison gas, her Poison Cloud orb seals entrances, and Viper's Pit ultimate creates a toxic cloud that engulfs an entire area, reducing enemy health and vision. These abilities make her extremely valuable for any open area maps, but anyone playing her also needs to carefully manage her fuel meter to remain effective throughout a match.
Astra

Astra can manipulate the map to her advantage. She places stars in any area of the map using her Astral Form, and each one can be remotely converted into smokes, stuns, or black holes. She also has an ultimate that creates a massive wall that blocks bullets and sound.
She is a perfect complement to a team that plays slow and methodical, but using her effectively demands a high level of strategic thinking and foresight.
Harbor

Harbor uses water to create cover. He sends out rolling water that turns into a wall of water, can throw a water bubble that can absorb bullets, and has an ultimate that tracks enemies and detonates a geyser that can stun. He is not a common pick, but he is very effective on narrow maps.
Clove

Clove broke the rules of how to play support agents upon their release in 2024, being an actual Controller that plays like a Duelist. Their Ruse smokes can be placed after dying, Meddle weakens enemies, and they can heal from killing enemies. Their ultimate ability allows them to resurrect after dying.
Being able to contribute even after dying is huge, but self-reviving drives their value through the roof. Clove is consistently one of the most popular playable characters in-game.
Miks

Added in March 2026, Miks is the newest Valorant agent and the only Controller who can heal allies. Harmonizes buffs himself and another ally, which refreshes on kills, while M-Pulse can toggle between a stun or healing. His ultimate can throw enemies backward, remove their hearing, and slow them down. He can also place smokes using a tactical map.
Only two agents were capable of healing allies before Miks, but because of everything else he brings to Valorant, he rewrote the entire Controller meta upon release.
Sentinels: Lock Down Sites, Watch Flanks

These are Valorant's defensive specialists whose primary job is to lock down areas, set traps, and prevent sneak attacks from behind. There are currently seven agents in this category.
Sage

She can heal herself and others with her Healing Orb, while Barrier Orb creates a wall of ice to block choke points. She can also slow enemies that walk over her Slow Orb, and her ultimate can resurrect dead teammates to full health. She is the only agent who can revive others, and that has been enough to keep her relevant for the six years she's been in the game.
Cypher

His Trapwires reveal enemies that trigger them, and he has Cyber Cage, which serves as his smoke and includes an audible cue. He also has a Spycam that can reveal any enemy he has marked from a safe distance.
Cypher is the best surveillance agent in the game, and even his ultimate is designed for gathering information on the enemy. With it, he can extract data from a dead enemy to reveal the location of all enemy agents on the map. His presence alone distorts the way experienced players traverse the map.
Killjoy

Killjoy uses automated robots to hold onto spaces. Alarmbot detects enemies, while Turret shoots at them. Then there's Nanoswarm that can deal heavy damage. She can also detain all enemies in a large area using her ultimate, though this takes time to charge.
Her kit is extremely effective on smaller maps, but on large, open maps, it is greatly reduced.
Chamber

This is the agent for players who are very confident in their mechanical aim. Chamber starts off with a custom Tour de Force sniper, which constitutes his ultimate ability. He can also place trip mines, teleport to assigned anchors with Rendezvous, and can conjure a high-powered pistol.
He was the most overpowered agent at launch, but got nerfed hard. While he can still be effective, he is nowhere near as strong as he once was.
Deadlock

Deadlock makes use of her skills to limit enemy movement, such as her GravNet that forces enemies to crouch and slows them, and Barrier Mesh, which spawns a multi-segment wall that blocks access but lets bullets through. She can also trap an enemy who is then dragged back to Deadlock's original position and eliminated with her ultimate.
Despite being released as a weak agent, she has been buffed and has become highly effective at stopping enemies from dropping surprise attacks.
Vyse

Vyse can slow and damage enemies with Razorvine, can blind enemies for 2 seconds with Arc Rose, and has a Shear wall that can halt any enemy advance. She can also jam the primary weapon of all enemies within range of her ultimate, which leaves them unable to defend themselves properly.
Her ultimate alone can guarantee a round win if used at the right time. This makes her one of the best agents in the game.
Veto

Veto was released in October 2025 and is the newest Sentinel that is built to deny enemy utility. His Crosscut places a vortex on the ground that allows him to teleport to safety, while his other abilities shut down and disable the enemies' strategies.
He is highly mobile, and his presence dictates certain map meta, but his playstyles require a lot of skill and effort to master.
