The Best League of Legends Coaches in the World
Coaches are the unsung heroes of the League of Legends competitive community.
Leaving the spotlight and renown to their players, coaches work tirelessly to ensure
their teams are at the top of their games, both inside and outside the game.
Responsible for a team’s strategies, composure, team play, and individual play coaches
are the brains within the Esports machine.
As a celebration of these backseat generals, here’s an introduction to three of the most
prolific and successful coaches in the entire world.
kkOma – SK Telecom T1
Serving as head coach for SKT T1 for the last seven years, kkOma is considered one of
the most highly sought-after coaches in the League of Legends world.
Adopting a strict coaching style and attitude kkOma has successfully steered T1 to
three world championships, 16 total first-place finishes, five second-place finishes, and
eight third/fourth-place finishes.
kkOma started out his Esports career as a Starcraft II player. After an unsuccessful attempt at qualifying for GSL Code A, he left the world of Starcraft for pastures new.
Initially signing for StarTale, he was shortly let go after a reported “difference of opinion”.
You have to assume that they are kicking themselves after that decision.
kkOma was recently nominated at The Game Awards for the Esports head coach
category, but lost out to the winner Zonic, who is a prolific CSGO coach in his own right.
Grabbz – G2 Esports
Grabbz was picked up by G2 Esports in December of 2017.
While he had an impressive showing in 2018, earning a regional championship and a
second-place finish as worlds, his 2019 run blows this completely out of the water.
Under his expert watch, G2 competed in seven notable tournaments this year. They
won six of them. Coming second only at the world championship for a heartbreaking second year in a row, being taken down 3-0 by FunPlus phoenix.
That’s an 85% first-place finish rate for the year. That is an absolutely insane statistic.
Most if not all other major teams would struggle to achieve an 85% top-three finish rate,
nevermind taking home those trophies.
He, like kkOma and the man you’re about to meet, was also nominated for Esports coach of the year.
G2 Esports certainly struck gold when signing this German tactical genius.
Cain - Team Liquid
Hailing from South Korea, Cain found his way to the Northern America region where he signed with the top North American team, Team Liquid.
Starting off his run with Liquid in 2017, Cain has continued to year on year, and his results have grown with him.
With two underwhelming 9th place finishes, the hope that Cain had arrived to bring North
America to new heights seemed to be displaced.
Cain did, however, take 2019 by storm. With four first-place finishes, two silver medals, and
again a rough top 12 at the world championship.
